ROSELAND FESTIVAL

The first Roseland Festival was held between Friday, 13th and Saturday, 28th October 2006. During this first year, the events were centred on St Mawes and Portscatho, providing a platform for local talent and an opportunity to see professional performers from further afield. A wide range of events was planned to suit all tastes : musical concerts, literary events, art exhibitions as well as dance and film events. Full details of the Festival events can be found on the Festival website. The 2007 Festival is now over.

RIVER TRIP

An evening in early summer was spent cruising the creeks and inlets of the river Fal on a 'Fal history' trip. It was high water springs so all the creeks which dry out at low water were fully navigable and we saw the area from the water in an entirely new light. There are so many interesting places to see and also lots of wildlife. We passed the new King Harry Ferry at Trelissick, went right up to Truro, and viewed Devoran, Penpol, St Clement, old Kea with its special plum plantations, the brick works at Trelonk and Ruan Lanihorne, to name just a few places. The sight of Falmouth lit up at night on our return was beautiful. (The local water taxi met us in Falmouth Bay and whisked some passengers away to St Mawes with a very efficient transfer out in the deep water). There's no need to go to Venice for these amazing water activities and views.

LONELY PLANET BLUELIST

Looking at an article by Colin Gregory in the local West Briton newspaper I read that Cornwall is “on a par with Antarctica as a ‘must see’ in 2007”, according to the publication “Lonely Planet Bluelist – the best in travel 2007”. It is described as a ‘hot destination’ with its spectacular coastline, quaint fishing villages, granite tors and mythological connections.
There are attractions which draw in international visitors – The Eden Project (still expanding), Tate St Ives, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall, vibrant festivals (we had our own “Roseland Festival” in October) plus the highest concentration of organic and traditional food producers in the UK. “It’s a place of arresting beauty blessed with cultural and historical riches”.
There are defining experiences, such as – getting cut off by the tide at St Michael’s Mount, and random facts – speculation over the existence of the Beast of Bodmin – and also bizarre sights – the Helston Furry Dance and the Padstow Hobby Horse festival.

MINACK THEATRE

A visit to the Minack open-air theatre can be a very exciting experience. We find a matinee on a Wednesday or Friday is ideal for travelling to Porthcurno and back in the daylight. Next year's newly issued programme includes As you like it, Pinocchio, The Yeomen of the Guard and the opera The Merry Wives of Windsor. More details from www.minack.com/theatregoers/whatson.htm.

TRURO'S HALL FOR CORNWALL

is very easily reached from Trewince for evening entertainment. Programme listings are at http://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/showslistall.asp

LODGES FOR SALE

We have completed the foundations of the new lodges currently being sold in the "Top Woods" area of the site (not actually woods - just an area with a few trees!) As always, they have great views of the sea. The Roseland is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the coastline is designated "Heritage Coast", and new holiday property is scarce. There is actually a Tourist Restraint policy so that the area is not spoiled or over-exploited, so you can be sure that it will stay the same. Please ring Peter (01872 580289) for more details and see our Lodge Sales page.

MUSICAL EVENINGS

We had two very successful 'impromptu concerts' in the high season, thanks mainly to the Friederich family from Heidelberg, ably supported by holiday makers and one or two local artistes. We are just amazed at the talent which shows up at these events: the pleasure given is greatly appreciated and is so inspiring for the children present.

BASKING SHARKS

have been visiting the warm waters of the Fal river recently. The sight of the fins in the water does not seem to deter swimmers. On a recent visit to the Minack they gave us two shows for the price of one! YOU WILL BE AMAZED TO KNOW that on 19th December 2005 huge numbers of beautiful Common dolphins were observed in the Falmouth area. First approximately 200 Dolphins were seen. The sea was calm, and at a position 14 miles off the coast over 1,000 dolphins were encountered. They were rushing, feeding and squealing, and their squeals could easily be heard through the boat’s hull. There were dolphins as far as the eye could see. It is thought that there is every chance of a truly fantastic winter of sightings, and of seeing the awesome Fin Whales. You can read more about this on the OrcaSeafari website.

The DAPHNE DU MAURIER Festival of Arts and Literature

BULB-MANIA at the EDEN PROJECT

A 20-strong team planted more than a million bulbs right across the vast outdoor arena surrounding the world's two biggest greenhouses – each one by hand.
The result is that the 2006 Bulb Mania festival was the most spectacular horticultural show in Eden's five-year history, with a staggering 292 different types of flowers on display through the season.
